about

This archive release, like the dusty old DATs and hard drives it has been collated from, reconnects us to a time of early experimentation.

A time of simple, hypnotic rhythmic refrains. Raw analogue soul and murky samples. Reinterpretations of, and homages to, 70s Sci-Fi soundtracks & African Dance - in fact Quaid's reverence for a whole spectrum of Black Music is realised in this collection.

We hear the origins of the futuristic soulful vocal style from long time collaborator Shepherd Manyika, and a lengthy vocal sample from black iconoclast Amiri Baraka.

Whilst it's true the productions are more naive, and the tracks' construction often sparse, the whole release just teems with funk. In this sense then 'Rhythm Trax & Sci—Soul' is both an essential document in its own right - and a tantalising pre-cursor to Quaid's musical narrative.
